Led by Sadio Mané, The Lions of Teranga are the second-highest-ranked team at AFCON 2023, behind World Cup semi-finalists Morocco. The former Liverpool forward is joined by a host of Premier League players. These include midfielders Pape Matar Sarr and Idrissa Gueye from Spurs and Everton respectively. There is also Fulham defender Fode Ballo-Toure, Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson, and Moussa Niakhate and Cheikhou Kouyate, both of Nottingham Forest.

Gambia had a rather traumatic time on the way to the tournament. Their flight to the Ivory Coast had to be aborted after a seeming lack of oxygen onboard, with players and staff falling unconscious. Hopefully, The Scorpions will have recovered from this nightmarish experience to give a good account of themselves on the pitch. They may not have a huge array of stars to pick from – this is only their second AFCON – but Gambia will want to make all their hard work to qualify count.

Here's how they line up:

Senegal: E. Mendy; Koulibaly, Niakhate, Jakobs; Diatta, Camara, P. Gueye, A. Diallo; Sarr, H. Diallo, Mane

Gambia: Gaye; Janki, Gomez, Colley, Touray; Adams, Manneh, Barrow, Darboe, Minteh; Sowe

Senegal are making their fifth straight appearance in the continental competition and have made it to the final in the last editions. After finishing as the runners-up in 2019, they lifted their maiden AFCON title in the 2021 edition.

Gambia, meanwhile, have qualified for the final for the second time in a row as they secured a second-place finish in Group G, behind Mali but ahead of Congo and South Sudan. They did not make an appearance in the continental tournament before the previous edition, where they enjoyed a good debut campaign and made it to the quarter-finals, losing 2-0 to hosts Cameroon.

Attacker Boulaye Dia and back-up goalkeeper Seny Dieng have been ruled out of the tournament for Senegal, with Bamba Dieng and Alfred Gomis called up to the squad as replacements.

Captain Sadio Mane will be the main man up front as ever, while former Chelsea duo Edouard Mendy and Kalidou Koulibaly will be crucial figures at the back.

The Gambia squad were forced to make an emergency landing on their flight to Yamoussoukro because of a lack of oxygen inside the plane. Gambia boss Tom Saintfiet said his players were still suffering from nausea and headaches a day later.

Fortunately, the incident had no long-term impact on any of the players or personnel, so Saintfiet will have a complete squad at his disposal for the competition's first encounter.

Feyenoord teenage attacker Yankuba Minteh, owned by Newcastle United, has been touted as one to watch in this competition after scoring three goals and providing two assists in 12 Eredivisie outings.

The Lions of Teranga secured their first-ever AFCON title in 2021 as Sadio Mane's spot kick secured a dramatic penalty shootout win over rivals Egypt in Cameroon. Aliou Cisse's side have been tipped as potential favourites to retain their trophy after being paired in Group C alongside Cameroon, Guinea and Gambia.

Cisse has the majority of his key stars available for AFCON 2024 with Premier League duo Moussa Niakhate and Idrissa Gana Gueye providing experience alongside an attack featuring Mane. Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson starts their opener on the bench, as does Everton's Gueye.

Gambia's squad features players at clubs across the world and Saudi Pro League attacking duo Assan Ceesay and Musa Barrow are the key players. Ceesay starts on the bench, though.

A penalty shootout win over Egypt in the final two years ago saw Senegal lift the AFCON trophy for the first time, and they are one of the favourites to do so again and defend their crown.

A fast start is important in Group C, with Cameroon next up for Senegal, but Gambia will be eyeing an opening shock. They reached the quarter-finals in 2022, beating Tunisia and Guinea, also in Group C, on their way to the last eight.
